How Observed Holidays Work

Several federal holidays 2027 fall on a weekend. When a federal holiday falls on a weekend, federal workers get another day off instead:

  • If the holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the Friday before.
  • If it falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the Monday after.

In 2027, that rule applies to Juneteenth (Saturday), Independence Day (Sunday) and Christmas Day (Saturday). It also applies to New Year’s Day 2028.

Private employers do not have to follow the same rules, so check your company’s holiday calendar.

How to Turn Vacation Days Into Longer Breaks

How to Turn Vacation Days Into Longer Breaks

With some smart planning around the federal holidays 2027 schedule, a few vacation days can give you much longer breaks in 2027:

BreakVacation days neededTotal days off
Christmas to New Year (December 24 to January 2)4 (December 27 to 30)10
Thanksgiving week (November 20 to 28)4 (November 22 to 24 and 26)9
Veterans Day (November 11 to 14)1 (November 12)4
Fourth of July (July 3 to 11)4 (July 6 to 9)9
Memorial Day (May 29 to June 6)4 (June 1 to 4)9
Labor Day (September 4 to 12)4 (September 7 to 10)9

The Christmas break is the best value of the year. Because both Christmas and New Year’s Day 2028 are observed on Fridays, just four vacation days give you 10 days off in a row.

Book early. Flights and hotels for holiday weekends, especially Thanksgiving, Christmas and the Fourth of July, often get more expensive as the dates get closer.

Federal Holidays 2027 and Your Paycheck

Federal Holidays 2027 and Your Paycheck

How holidays can affect payments, deposits and bills

Federal holidays can change normal banking schedules. If a payment is due around a holiday, knowing how processing works can help you avoid delays and plan your money better.

💵

Direct Deposits

If payday falls on a federal holiday, direct deposits are often paid on the previous business day. Some employers or banks may follow a different schedule, so confirm with yours.

🏦

Social Security Payments

When a Social Security payment date falls on a federal holiday, the payment is generally issued on the business day before.

🧾

Bills Due on a Holiday

Some lenders accept payments on the next business day without a late fee when a due date falls on a holiday. Always check your lender’s payment and late-fee policy.

🔄

Bank Transfers

Many standard bank transfers sent on a federal holiday are processed on the next business day, which can delay when the money arrives.

💡 Plan Ahead

Check your bank’s holiday schedule, confirm your payday with your employer, and schedule important bill payments early to avoid unexpected delays.

SCOOPS BUZZ | YOUR DAILY INFORMATION GUIDE

Because several federal holidays 2027 fall on Fridays and Mondays, they can affect when money arrives.

  • Direct deposits due on a holiday are usually paid on the business day before, but some employers and banks pay a day later. Check with yours.
  • Social Security payments that fall on a federal holiday are paid on the business day before.
  • Bills due on a holiday are often accepted on the next business day without a late fee, but always check your lender’s rules.
  • Bank transfers sent on a holiday usually process on the next business day.

Planning Travel Around Federal Holidays 2027

Holiday weekends are the busiest and most expensive times to travel. To save money:

  • Book early. Airfares for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas usually rise as the dates get closer.
  • Travel on the holiday itself. Flying on the morning of the holiday is often cheaper and quieter than the day before.
  • Leave a day early or come back a day late. Even one extra vacation day can help you avoid the worst crowds.
  • Watch for school breaks. Spring break and summer vacation can make some weekends busier than others.

Do Private Employers Have to Give Federal Holidays Off?

No. Federal holidays apply to federal government employees. Private companies decide their own paid holidays, and there is no federal law that requires them to give workers these days off or pay extra for working them.

Most large employers give between 8 and 11 paid holidays a year, most often New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

A Short History of Federal Holidays

Congress created the first federal holidays in 1870, covering New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas for federal workers in Washington, DC.

In 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved several holidays to Mondays to create more three day weekends. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was added in 1983, and Juneteenth became the 11th federal holiday in 2021.

You can read more about each holiday’s history on the federal holidays Wikipedia page.
